LEGENDÄR Desk Mat WRYTE

Most desks are protected by people who have never sat at one for long. A proper desk should be allowed to age, and so should the thing that covers it.

This is the LEGENDÄR Desk Mat WRYTE — a writing surface cut from a single piece of vegetable-tanned saddle leather.

It is honest leather. After dyeing it is only lightly greased and otherwise left untreated, which means it will keep a record of your evenings: ink that got away from the pen, the ghost of a coffee mug set down without thinking, a paler patch where the afternoon sun reached it for a season. No two are the same. Each carries the folds from the neck of the hide and the odd small scuff, and the colour shifts across it because no opaque dye was used to flatten it into uniformity. The edges, by contrast, are dyed and polished by hand, and a debossed LEGENDÄR signet sits quietly in one corner.

Jonah keeps one on the desk where he sorts coins. He claims he can date his own life by the marks on it — the ring from the winter he catalogued the Roman bronzes, the ink shadow from a fountain pen that leaked precisely once and was never forgiven. He says the mat remembers his late nights more reliably than he does. Given the hour most of them ended, this is probably true.

Underneath all of that, it does the plain work: it gives the pen a kind surface and saves the wood beneath from everything you are about to spill on it.
