Most of a coin's secrets are kept at the edge of what the eye can see.

This is a pocket microscope with a continuous zoom from 60x to 100x and its own LED, so a coin gives up its detail even under bad light. The housing is black plastic, it runs on three included 392 cells, and it measures 88 by 30 by 20mm and weighs 30 grams — small enough to live in a coat pocket or a glovebox. It was made for coins, but it does not object to stamps, minerals, or the small print of suspicious electronics.

It is the magnification that undoes whole evenings. Jonah once sat down at midnight to verify a single date and, somewhere around the second coffee, found a tiny engraver's initial tucked into the truncation of a portrait — a letter most people will never know is there. He spent the rest of the night going through coins he had owned for years, certain now that every one of them was hiding something. Several were. This is the danger of good magnification: it does not so much answer questions as manufacture better ones.

Sixty to a hundred times closer, and suddenly the coin has more to say.

The detail is where the attention naturally lands.

One small lens, lit white —
the coin you thought you knew well
begins to confess.

A piece worth keeping

"Anything with that much history deserves better accommodation than a drawer."

Chosen, like everything here, for character as much as condition — set where it can be seen and used, rather than left in the dark.
