The SMART coin box is a low tray with 35 square compartments for coins up to 27mm, set in blue velvet beneath a clear stacking frame. It measures just 19 by 195 by 250mm, deliberately shallow, and it is sized to slide into a safe deposit box — which tells you something about the coins it was designed for. The clear frame lets you read a full row at a glance without lifting the lid.

It is the safe-deposit detail that sends him off. Jonah once accompanied a collector to a bank vault to view a single coin the man kept there and visited roughly twice a year, like a relative. The vault was cold, strip-lit, and entirely without romance, and yet the collector handled his one coin with more tenderness than most people manage for anything. Jonah understood it completely.
