The QoT stamps had check letters, but it became clear that these were not arranged in a logical sequence. The plating became something of a competition between E.L. Pemberton in England and J.-B. Moens in Belgium, and was published in the journals of the 1860s. It is interesting to note that in doing the work, Pemberton identified an "error of transfer", i.e., one of the substituted transfer pairs.

Bill Purves intended to publish a book on these stamps to follow his Half-length book published in 1953, and his brief preface to this proposed book has been included in the new volume. Purves eventually accumulated over 7,000 stamps (actual or as photographs) in an attempt to identify all the printing stones used for the lithographs. The present authors have almost doubled this number.

This work has confirmed that the two printing contracts of Campbell & Co. and Campbell & Fergusson that followed Thomas Ham's engraved printing, and totalling 3,500,000 stamps, were made using 13 printing stones, nine for the Campbell printings, and four for the Campbell & Fergusson printings. All the printings were made from stones made up of transfers taken from Ham's 50-on steel plate, and the total number of different positions which need to be identified to complete the plating is 1,900. This large task is only possible due to two factors - the check letters which immediately identify the position of any stamp in the transfers of 50, and the decision to increase the inland letter rate from 2d to 4d from 1 July 1855, but not to issue a 4d stamp until January 1857, meaning that the QoT stamp was used as pairs in very large numbers. The plating is not complete, because one stone (Campbell Stone 1) is rare and not all positions from this stone have been seen, and Campbell Stone 9, which comprises 300 units and not all positions have identifiable flaws.

The new work also addresses the complex problems of the numerous shades of these stamps, and provides a number of indicators for collectors to be able to divide their stamps between the Campbell & Co and Campbell & Fergusson contracts, which has been a problem for most collectors for many years.

AUSTRALIAN BANKNOTES.

SECOND EDITION.

AUTHOR: Mr M Vort-Ronald

History: A completely revised and enlarged book. Levinson

In The Early Dated Coins of Europe, 1234-1500, Robert A. Levinson presents for the first time, a comprehensive listing in chronological order, by region, state, and mint, of all the known types of gold, silver and copper dated coins struck in medieval Europe bearing an Anno Domini date of 1500 or earlier. These early dated coins, form one of the first links between medieval and modern coinage. Anno Domini dating of coins using Latin script did not begin until the mid-13th century, and did not become prevalent in Europe until three centuries later. The book focuses on the eight distinct regions in which coins were issued: Germany, Southern Netherlands, Northern Netherlands, Hapsburg lands, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Italy, and France and organizes the known pre-1501 Anno Domini dated coins chronologically within each region. For the first time, there is for each of the nearly 1200 coins listed (twice as many as in the Frey work), the full legends, descriptions, ruler names, references, weights and rarity. There are nearly 1000 photographs and line drawings, and given the extreme rarity of the majority of the coins, this in itself represents an extraordinary undertaking. It is in four parts: The first is a lengthy history of early dated coinage, including discussions of the types, metallurgy, classifications, etc. The second part is the 173 page catalogue of coinage, divided into the eight regions. The third part is a listing, again by region, of all the states issuing early dated coinage, with a history of each state s coinage and a cross-reference to all the coins listed in the catalogue. The fourth part contains eight appendices with alphabetical listings, translations of legends, a photographic glossary of coin types, a listing of early dated coinage using Islamic script, and other useful information. A a loose-leaf price guide is also included.

• Large (A4) (12 x 8.5 inch) format, hard bound
• 336 pages
• Color photos
When the First Edition of The Early Dated Coins of Europe, 1234-1500 made its debut in 2007, it presented for the first time a comprehensive listing, by date, region, state, ruler and mint, of all the known types of gold, silver and copper coins struck in medieval Europe with an Anno Domini date of 1500 or earlier. Since then, it has become the worldwide reference for early dated coinage.
These "early dated coins" form one of the first links between medieval and modern coinage. Anno Domini dating of coins using Latin script did not begin until the mid-13th century, and did not become prevalent in Europe until three centuries later. Separating those few coins with dates from the many struck without them at a thousand mints and by hundreds of different coin-issuing authorities was a daunting task that took the author more than fifteen years to accomplish.
The First Edition of this book rendered obsolete the only volume remotely comparable, the long out-of-print work by Albert Frey in 1915. Today, when an early dated coin is sold, whether in Europe or America, it is accompanied by a Levinson reference number. This revised and updated Second Edition is in full color throughout, with improved illustrations, as well as more than 200 new illustrations. More than 125 new types and subtypes have been added, and there are over 500 updates to catalog descriptions.
The book focuses on the eight distinct regions in which coins were issued:
• Germany • Southern Netherlands
• Northern Netherlands • Habsburg lands
• Switzerland • Scandinavia
• Italy • France
and organizes the known pre-1501 Anno Domini dated coins chronologically within each region.
For the first time, there is for each of the nearly 1200 coins listed (twice as many as in the Frey work), the full legends, descriptions, ruler names, references• 336 pages, weights and rarity.
There is for each of the nearly 1200 coins listed (twice as many as in the Frey work), the full legends, descriptions, ruler names, references, weights and rarity.
There are nearly 1,000 photographs and line drawings, an extraordinary undertaking given the extreme rarity of the majority of the coins.
The book is in four parts: the first is a lengthy history of early dated coinage, including discussions of the types, metallurgy, classifications, etc.
The second part is the catalogue of coinage, divided into the eight regions.
The third part is a listing, again by region, of all the states issuing early dated coinage, with a history of each state's coinage and a cross-reference to all the coins listed in the catalogue.
The fourth part contains eight appendices with alphabetical listings, translations of legends, a photographic glossary of coin types, a listing of early dated coinage using Islamic script, and other useful information.
Collecting these difficult to acquire coins has been a passion for Robert A. Levinson, a Los Angeles attorney and an ardent collector, for nearly three decades, and sharing his enthusiasm for them led him to spend nearly fifteen years compiling the First Edition of this book. It was accomplished in no small thanks to the cooperation of many of the world's foremost numismatists, coin dealers and museums in more than half a dozen countries, who have also enthusiastically supported him for this new edition.
The glossaries and appendices are invaluable not only to collectors of "early dated coins," but also to anyone needing a quick reference to medieval coin-issuing cities, states and mints, identifying their basic designs, or reading their sometimes complicated legends. It was, however, for many years an important stopping point on Queensland's Torres Strait mail route to the United Kingdom. The story of the development of this service is told.
Its early postal history is noteworthy for the use of three different numeral obliterators - Nos. 51, 148 and 336, the first being of particular rarity. All markings follow the Colonial Queensland and later Commonwealth patterns, but all examples of instructional markings are very scarce. Thursday Island postal markings are exceptional in one regard - paquebot markings - of which some eight types are described and illustrated.

During World War II Thursday Island and neighbouring Horn Island were important bases and the full story of the military postal arrangements and markings is given.

This copiously illustrated monograph will present the many collectors of this area with a comprehensive picture of the scope of the field.

Published in 1988

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0788/5206/3332/files/20230913_145444_0001-e1694583475731.jpg?v=1780871445
queensland-postal-rates-and-charges-1832-1913-hugh-m-campbell
Queensland postal rates and charges: 1832-1913 - Hugh M. Campbell

Queensland postal rates have proved to be a particularly difficult subject, since the survival of primary sources such as Postal Guides has been poor. Contemporary almanacs have filled some of the gaps.
Up to 1860, of course, New South Wales Postal Acts, and postal rates, applied. Although mail could theoretically be sent to all the places mentioned in the N.S.W. rates tables of the period, the author notes in his introductory remarks to the pre-1860 overseas postal rates that he has seen only two covers to countries other than the United Kingdom.
The overseas letter rates from 1860 up to admission to the U.P.U. in 1891 fill 20 pages, and the corresponding newspaper rates a further four pages. Particularly interesting and complex are the overseas registration rates for this period, since apart from the registration fee, mail to many countries was also liable to double the usual postage rates.
The period from 1889 saw the standardisation of many charges, and this trend becomes even more apparent following Federation in 1901.
Throughout, the monograph is Iiberally illustrated. There are 124 covers shown from the author's collection which demonstrate most of significant rate's changes, and their frequent association with changes in mail contracts and routes.
Essential in a work of this nature is the ease of its use. Inevitably, covering such a broad time period, the book must consist largely of tabulations of rates. The layout in this book is admirable in this regard, and an index of localities makes reference easy. This is a model well worth inspecting by students thinking of undertaking a similar project.

Published in 1995

Renniks Australian Coin & Banknote Values 31st Ed. The work is copiously illustrated to demonstrate the printing technique and the resultant varieties.
The sequence of printing stones and the printings made from them outlined by Pope are fully supported by both archival and philatelic evidence, and seem unlikely to be challenged in the future. While acknowledging the work of previous workers, most notably Chadwick and Purves, previous theories have had to be modified in the light of the discovery of the printing records (found by Pope in the Western Australian archives), and the spectacular re-appearance of the intermediate stone in 1979.
A guide to the varieties on the common printing stone ("2A") is given, and the complete plating of this may be feasible (a complete sheet of 240 remains intact in the Royal collection).
